The shooting board is a traditional workshop aid, used in conjunction with a bench plane laid on its side, that enables the user to cut square ends on small components with a high degree of precision.

Constructed from stable 18mm birch ply, with fence and hook made from solid beech and assembled on a jig in a factory for consistent squareness of well within half a degree.

The final minutes and seconds of squareness are achieved through the process of 'shooting in' which is then ongoing through the life of the board as it wears. Vertical squareness is achieved using the lateral adjustment of the plane. With a well set up and maintained board it should be possible to halve a knife line struck square to the reference edge.

As with all traditional shooting boards, this is a working workshop tool rather than a finished reference instrument. It's normal for a new board to require initial 'shooting in' to bring it to perfect squareness with your specific plane - minor deviation out of the box is expected and allows the user to tune the board precisely to their setup. Likewise, some breakout or surface roughness on ply edges is typical of this type of construction and does not affect performance.
