African Pink Ivory Wood

African Pink Ivory Wood

Native tree of Southern Africa, pink ivory (also called Red Ivory, Nini or Goloty) is found from Zimbabwe in the North to the Eastern Cape in the South. In the 19th century pink ivory was known by the Zulus as "royal wood" and only members of the Zulu Kingdom's royal family were officially allowed to wear ornaments made from pink ivory.

Pink ivory trees grow up-to 15 meters tall with a dense and round crown. It grows in open woodland, rocky hillsides and along drainage lines. The heartwood ranges from light pink to a dark red colour, the sapwood is yellowish.

The heart is very hard and heavy with a density of 1.1 t / m3, when it is air-dried. Pink ivory wood dries slowly and doesn't split easily due to its high oil content. Its attractive colouring makes it ideal for carving, turning, inlay work and even musical instruments.
