Joseph Marples

These limited edition Ceylon satinwood traditional marking tools were kindly made for us by Joseph Marples Ltd in Sheffield. Established in 1840, the third year of Queen Victoria’s reign, Marples is one of the few surviving Victorian tool manufacturers, the company has been owned and run by the Marples family for five consecutive generations. Satinwood was first used to make fine English furniture in the late 1700’s, and has been associated with the highest levels of craftsmanship ever since. It is not the easiest material to work with, but certainly one of the most rewarding. Over time it develops a gorgeous rich toffee coloured patina that strengthens and deepens its shimmering figure.
