What used to be a lead ruler or flexible curve, for drawing applications you can bend it to whatever shape you need, and then replicate that shape in whatever position or orientation is required (those lovely S shaped spokes on old bandsaw wheels for example).
Primarily a drawing tool, they are also handy for scribed joints on wonky walls and for measuring curved surfaces so that you don't end up cutting your edge banding 5mm too short.
