Established in 1828 on a site now covered by Sheffield City Hall, Robert Sorby & Sons is one of Sheffield's oldest surviving (and thriving) brands. The Sorby family's involvement in Sheffield toolmaking goes back much further and includes Sheffield's first Master Cutler, Robert Sorsby in 1624, the second s was dropped from the family name in the 1780's.
Ground from EN45 silico-manganese spring steel forgings and individually hardness tested to RC58, Sorby bench chisel blades have quite a pronounced taper, giving a balance of strength in the blade and delicacy at the tip. The backs are well ground and with correct technique require little preparation. The ⅛" is particularly well ground with an edgeless trapezoidal section giving excellent clearance for dovetails, hence we have included it in the set.
The classic carver pattern English boxwood handles are in two sizes to maintain correct balance and feel; as well as being supremely smooth in the hand, boxwood chisel handles have been proven to stand the test of time.
Simultaneously elegant and tough as old boots, it's little wonder that for nearly two centuries Sorby has been a watchword for quality with woodworkers around the world.
