The Quangsheng No.5 jack plane is designed to be used across the grain, its weakest direction, to correct twists, cupping and bowing and bring the board close to the finished dimension. The blade should be honed with a camber to leave a scalloped surface, this minimises the amount of material you need to remove with the longer No.6 or No.7 planes to bring the board to size.

The narrow 2" blade of the No.5 makes it easier to push so you can take a fairly deep bite with each pass. For true jack planing work it is the more sensible choice.

Quangsheng bedrock pattern handplanes, unlike the more common Bailey pattern, have a full contact area between the body and the frog, hence the name 'bedrock'. The frog can also be adjusted to widen or narrow the mouth of the plane without the need to remove the irons. Simply loosen the two locking screws on either side at the back of the frog, adjust the central screw to set your desired mouth opening and then nip up the side screws again. This system is easier, faster, much more accurate, and less likely to damage the cutting edge.

    Excellent plane - thoroughly recommended.

These planes represent excellent value for money and in my view perform equally as well as the offerings from North America. My purchase was flat as a pancake with an iron which takes a really good long-lasting edge. The whole thing is a pleasure to use. The casting is a little gritty to start with but soon beds in.

    Amazed!

Posted by Paul on 1st Dec 2020

When I unpacked this, I was disappointed to find a small nick out of the bevel. However, after putting a camber on the blade that vanished, along with the heavy grinding marks. The overall quality is amazing considering the price. I usually buy Lie Nielsen planes, and this is nearly up there at about £180 less! After a brief honING I could easily use it as a smoother, let alone a jack. There's plenty of weight so it glides through knots. My initial doubts about "cheap chinese knock offs" have been completely dispelled. I will be buying more of these wit no hesitation.

Couldn't wait to test this plane and wasn't disappointed, with just the merest adjustment to the depth of cut it performed perfectly straight from the box, used a few times since with excellent results, reminds me of the no'5 baily that I used a long time ago at high school. well done Quangsheng.

Such a nice bit of kit. I bought the no 4 and no 5 and am not disappointed. Vey little to tell between the two but this one edges it - might be because I didnt have a 5 before. Weighty, elegant and easy to use. Very lttle set up required out of the box. Delivery and service was excellent.

Very good plane for the price. Not used it yet but took it out of the box to inspect it and check for flatness, everything was good straight out of the box. Delivery was spot on, right up to the plane arriving at my door within a one hour time slot. I'm a returning customer and future customer.

These Quangsheng planes from Workshop Heaven are excellent quality and great value for money. Buy them here as others claiming to be from the same factory just won't have the same quality control. We have a number of these planes both in our school and also in our fine furniture workshop.
