Have you ever admired a piece of furniture made from beautiful burr or exotic interlocked timber and wondered how it was planed?
The answer may well be a scraper plane. These amazing tools are one step beyond a high angle smoothing plane, they take a very light cut and produce a clean surface with no concerns about grain direction and no tearout.
The blade is sharpened at 45 degrees, either square or very lightly cambered, and burnished to produce a hook that does the cutting. Depth of cut can be fine tuned by leaning the blade forward (deeper) or back (shallower) by means of the opposed thumbwheels.
To achieve an even cut, the top of the blade can be lightly tapped with a hammer if one side is cutting too lightly, or you can tap the side of the blade if it is cutting too heavily.
All the benefits of scraping, with the advantage of a sole to keep the workpiece flat and comfortable handles. Please be aware that the blade may become hot after sustained periods of work.
