Japanese hammers

The classic Japanese Ryougouchi Genno (double faced hammer) is a multipurpose tool with one flat face and one slightly crowned giving different effects on the item being struck. The domed face causes more deformation – ideal for kigoroshi, the practice of compacting part of a joint and then wetting it, so it is easy to assemble but swells and tightens up afterwards. It is also used for giving nail heads a final tap to set them flush with the surface. The flat face compacts without spreading and is better for striking chisels, driving nails most of the way in and more gently, for setting Japanese planes.
