The Irwin auger was traditionally the bit of choice for carpenters. Since most of the timber in houses is softwood and access between joists is sometimes limited to half the swing of the brace, they were designed with a fast single leadscrew and a single twist to clear the waste efficiently.
Whilst the single twist means they are not as well balanced as a double twist auger, a nice sharp Irwin can still produce a surprisingly clean hole in moderate hardwoods, they also tend to be a bit cheaper as there are more of them around.
These beautiful used hand forged augers have been carefully selected and reconditioned, all have plenty of life left in them.
All are supplied in a new British made Workshop Heaven auger bit roll.
