Boxwood (buxus sempervirens) is a very slow growing shrub, the main stems rarely reach more than 5 inches in diameter and are cut into quarters to maximise stability.

The dense, uniform, creamy coloured box timber is unusually stable; hence its use for making rulers and scientific instruments, it lends itself especially well to finely detailed or ornate carving and the making of mechanical mechanisms.

Dense and stable, yet easy to work, the use of boxwood for turnery and making musical instruments has been recorded as far back as 2000 years ago. Its tight uniform texture makes boxwood an absolute dream to turn.
