African Blackwood

The African blackwood tree is a native of Tanzania, Mozambique, Southern Kenya and parts of North Eastern south Africa, the best wood being from Tanzania.

African blackwood heartwood is dark purple/brown with black streaks which predominate giving an almost black appearance.

The sapwood is creamy white which gives a strong contrast from the heartwood. Traditionally used to make instruments, particularly bagpipes and oboes, African Blackwood is a beautiful timber for toolmaking, turnery and handles.
