Resin stabilisation fills the cellular structure of the wood with a special liquid that is then cured, the resulting material looks like wood but behaves like a plastic; strong, waterproof, dimensionally stable and self finishing, so a high gloss surface can be achieved using progressively finer abrasives.
Because it is stabilised the wood can be cut in ways that would not normally be usable, in this case an endgrain slice showing the beautiful effect of spalting.
The distinctive coloration of spalted timber is caused by fungi travelling through the wood cells, the process is stopped by drying the wood, if carefully timed it creates a beautiful pattern through the timber.
