Sublime. It's enough.... Review by Rob Stoakley
Rating
I bought a pair of Japanese hand made saws from Matthew a few weeks ago and promised that I would scribble a few words about them. This happens to be the first time that I've handled the Dozuki and it's entirely appropriate that I've used it on some Japanese Yakushima Cedar, at least a thousand years old. I'm making a small box in the style of the maestro, Rob Ingham and it was necessary to cut the profile of both the handles, each of which form part of the two lids. Picking up the saw with some trepidation and applying it with the utmost care to the wood, the phrase that immediately springs to mind is 'hot knife through butter' but that's doing a dis-service to both the knife and the butter. There is simply no effort required to make the cut as the saw can be held between forefinger and thumb; the weight of it alone will enable it to slice down through the timber.
Whilst my previous Japanese rip was the Gyokucho 372, this handmade dozuki is light years ahead. With the caveat that you MUST be familiar with Japanese saws and how to use them correctly, this is probably one of the best investments you'll ever make for precision cabinet work.
