Twenty one and a half inches of hand forged WX15 (52100) ball bearing steel and riven ash, the Vyatka range from Petrograd Tools are proper heavy duty Millwrights chisels, used for making big things accurately.
The tang, square bolster and top of the 10" long blade (shoulder to tip) are finished straight from the hammer, the edges, bevels and underside are beautifully precision surface ground. The handles are fitted with thick stainless steel hoops top and bottom, oiled to protect the wood while retaining the natural texture and feel of the ash and neatly installed with a thick washer of best bridle leather.
The skilled craft of the Millwright has evolved from the designers and builders of the earliest medieval water and wind mills to specialised installers of heavy factory equipment, the tools that their predecessors developed over centuries are still very relevant and highly sought after by timber framers, boatbuilders, architectural conservationists and anyone else involved with large scale work.
Available in three sizes 1" (25mm), 1-1/2" (38mm) and 2" (50mm)
Totally hand made at PETROGRAD factory of joinery and carpentry tools.
Made in Russia.
“One of the most important persons connected with an iron works, in some respects the most important, was the Millwright. Without him no new machine could be installed, no old one repaired, and it was his constant, almost maternal attention which kept the “wheels going round” throughout the whole establishment.”
“The Story of Wortley Ironworks” by C. Reginald Andrews
