Petrograd list the Polotsk VIII as a general purpose hatchet, but in our opinion it is outstanding as a lighter alternative to a full sized carving axe. Maneuverable and easy to control, plenty of space for the fingers, a nice long edge with lots of clearance, and that wonderful hard Russian steel that just cuts and cuts.
With a fully choked grip and one finger down the side of the head for planing cuts it is totally balanced, gripped beneath the head it slices like a chef's knife, grab the belly of the handle to slice away from you or use the full length of the handle for chopping at the stump.
The Polotsk VIII is ideal for smaller craft items like spoons and kuksa, for sculpture and larger work we recommend the heavier Zvenigorod IX.
