Mopane: Colophospermum mopane - South Africa

Mopane is one of the most underrated African timbers but it has many desirable characteristics. Found only in Africa it is traditionally used for house and fence buidling, for railways sleepers and as mining props - such is the dense and rot resistant nature of this heavy reddish timber.   In addition, the bark is used locally to make twine and for tanning , the twigs are chewed as tooth brushes and the leaves are used to heal wounds. The tree is a major food source for the mopane worm, which are rich in protein and commonly eaten by the local people.

It makes excellent knife handles and is used for making woodwind instruments.

Blanks supplied sawn and unfinished with their grain ends wax-dipped to protect from splitting .
