South African Tambootie

South African Tambootie

Tambootie is a proper exotic timber treat from South Africa. Exquisitely beautiful, rock hard, reassuringly expensive and gorgeously scented. In fact the only thing it isn't, is endangered.

The figure of Tambootie is gorgeous, with fine clearly defined waves of deep gold and rich dark chocolate. Primarily straight grained, with occasional pieces exhibiting spectacular figure. It is generally well behaved with a fine even texture and has a good oil content so you can bring it to a high natural polish without adding finish.

Fine airborne Tambootie dust is very nasty stuff, it is one of the few timbers where additional precautions really are a necessity. Cover your skin, use extraction, scrape rather than sand wherever possible, gloves, goggles, a proper mask, the works. The smoke from tambootie is also toxic, so don't go popping your offcuts on the barbie.

With good dust management however, tambootie is a woodworker's dream timber.
