Marples Limited Edition Satinwood Screw-Slide Combination Gauge, Plated & Shield Head

This limited edition series of tools have been kindly made for us by Joseph Marples in Sheffield. They are made of satinwood, a hard and precious timber from the Indian subcontinent with a deep golden colour and chatoyant figure.

The screw slide combination gauge has a single pin on one side and dual pins on the other, allowing single lines or parallel lines for mortices. The second pin on a screw slide gauge is adjusted by twisting an adjuster on the end of the stem.

Satinwood is very hard, so the brass wear strips on the face are unlikely to benefit the first two or three generations of users, but along with the inlaid brass shield under the screw they do make for a very handsome tool that will age beautifully.

English marking gauges are used with the stock and the corner of the stem both in contact with the workpiece, the top of the gauge is rolled towards you as you push the gauge away, insinuating the pin or cutter onto the surface and carefully placing your mark.
