Marking gauges are used to position lines relative to an edge, forming the baselines of dovetails, shoulders of tenons and layout lines for stringing and edgebanding.

A nice, crisply cut, mark makes accurate working much easier. As you work down to the line with planes or chisels you aim to stop at the point where you have cut the line in half, leaving a tiny polished track around the component.
