Kunz Toothed Plane Irons

Kunz Toothed Plane Irons

Kunz toothed plane irons are used for straightening and dimensioning hard interlocked or burr timber - jack and try planing. The advantage of using a toothed blade over a standard one is that they eliminate any risk of tearout, remove more material and require less energy to push than a finely set plane with a steep pitch. This is invaluable when preparing boards with interlocked or alternating grain, like the piece of English burr oak above.

Once the surface of the board is ridged, you can switch to a straight bladed plane and almost remove the ridges before going again with the toothed blade. Upon reaching  the desired thickness you have a tea break and then very carefully plane out the marks completely using a scraper plane, steeply pitched smoother or very closely set cap iron. When planing to thickness it is always wise to remove some material from both faces of the board in order to avoid stability problems and cupping.

Toothed plane irons are easy to sharpen - just a single flat bevel.

These high quality plane irons are made in Germany from CrV steel and hardened to RC61.

This means that you can focus all of your attention on the shape of the board without a second thought for tearout until you reach the smoothing stage.
