Gyokucho 306 Razorsaw ZA Crosscut Dozuki 240mm

A fast, smooth and breathtakingly accurate crosscut (yokobiki) dozuki, excellent for precise cuts like tenon shoulders, lap joints and mitres. The cunning addition of a curved tip with rip teeth adds the facility for starting cuts mid-panel - ideal for jobs like excising grain-matched drawer fronts from a single board, or defining the shoulders of stopped housings.

The blades of Gyokucho saws are treated using a process called electroless nickel plating, this has three functions. Firstly, it protects the blade against corrosion, secondly it provides a nice shiny mirror surface, and thirdly its low friction properties inhibit resins and sap from building up on the blade - anything that does manage to get stuck to them can easily be washed off with warm soapy water. The teeth are differentially impulse hardened, one by one, bringing the outer surfaces to RC68 or more whilst still leaving the root of the tooth soft and therefore much less prone to fracture - not unlike tiny Japanese sword blades. They are equally happy working in softwoods or temperate hard woods and can, with care and a light touch, be used on exotic timbers too.

Top tips for crosscutting: observe the reflection of the timber in the side of the blade, if the reflection is kept level, the cut will be vertical. If the cut is at 45 degrees to an edge, the edge will appear to form a right angle with its own reflection in the side of the blade. Because we are used to seeing right angles and any error is multiplied by two in the reflected image, it is usually possible to saw a mitre to within a fraction of a degree using this method with little or no practice.
