Genuine Arizona Desert Ironwood (Olneya Tesota) is completely unique, it only grows in the Sonara desert and some living examples are estimated to be over two thousand years old.
Desert ironwood is one of the rarest and most precious timbers on the planet, the living trees have every kind of protection imaginable. There are however a small number of licensed collectors who are allowed to gather long dead timber in accordance with strict rules.
In sawn condition desert ironwood just looks like ordinary brown wood, but when you polish it you see the most amazing richly detailed figuring appear. Rich reds, deep black and flecks of bright reflective gold emerge in tightly packed waves of saw toothed detail. It doesn't stop there though, if you keep polishing you will see that each gold fleck isn't just plain but made up of hundreds of tiny lines, each of which twinkle and catch the light. It is quite simply the most incredible material I have ever had the privilege to work with.
