Clifton's direct lineage from Edward Preston Ltd of Birmingham is clearly evident in the design of these gorgeous spokeshaves.
Cast from unbreakable spheroidal graphite iron, the contact surfaces are hand buffed to a bright finish in contrast with the finely precision ground cutting iron and naturally textured cast surfaces.
The blade advance mechanism is mounted to the lever cap rather than the body, so that the blade can be set with a touch of skew without exerting any unequal loads on the adjuster.
Curved sole spokeshaves give access to tighter hollows and concave surfaces than you can get at with a flat soled spokeshave. Historically curved sole shaves are associated with being very finicky to use. To avoid this on the 650, Clifton have left a small flat around the mouth and then relief ground the back of the sole away, so you get great access with no loss of predictable behaviour.
