AS004 Full set of 13 Star M (Japan) Lewis pattern brace augers

In the 1980’s Draper went through a period of outsourcing production to Japanese companies in order to try and win back its reputation for quality (if you can find one of the vices or socket sets from this period they are superb). It turns out they also had some brace shank Lewis augers made by our very own Star-M (Wood Owl in the USA).

They are a little bit scruffy and the 13/16 has a slightly damaged tip so may need to be started from an awl hole (never a bad idea anyway) but the set is complete and beautifully accurate.

The Lewis design, developed from the earlier L’Hommedeiu pattern beloved of shipwrights and framers, is extremely strong – hence its popularity now for use in high powered drills. If you want some bits you can use with a big 12” brace and really give it the beans – these would be the perfect choice.

1/4” to 1” by sixteenths

Supplied in a new British made 18 pocket canvas auger roll.
