AS000 Full set of 13 Josiah Cooper crucible steel Jennings Augers 1870-1884

A remarkable set of augers by Josiah Cooper of Sheffield in exceptionally good condition, some were produced for Liverpool ironmongers Millar & Byers, others are branded “Preston’s exact size”. They are not all struck with Cooper’s own mark but enough of them are double stamped to confirm that they all came from the same workshop.

These are of exquisite quality and all in remarkable condition, with beautifully fine and crisp lead screws and characteristic high D shaped wings. One or two sizes have seen some use, but the majority look like they may have only been sharpened once.

Josiah was originally from Staffordshire and Established his auger manufacturing business in 1870, it was dissolved in 1884. If you do a bit of digging it looks like he may have been quite an interesting character.

  • 1/4" – 1” by sixteenths
  • 9/16 is a replacement (William Marples of similar era and quality)
  • Supplied in a new British made 18 pocket canvas auger roll.

NOTICE is here'by given, that the Partnership heretofore subsisting between us the undersigned, Josiah Cooper and George Moulson, carrying on the businies's of Auger Manufacturers, at 53, Bath-street, Sheffield, in the county of York, is this day dissolved by mutual consent.—'Dated this 9th day of October, 1884. Josiah Cooper. George Moulson
