AG042 James Swan 1-1/8" - 1-1/2" Jennings Pattern Auger Bits

Large augers were generally produced as specials, usually in batches of a single size for a specific industrial use and many are not even stamped with a makers mark.

To find a gradutated set, 18 - 24 by sixteenths, in such excellent condition, by a single manufacturer is therefore incredibly rare. Large bits like this need to be kept super sharp and used with a brace that has a generous swing, but just like their smaller counterparts they will cut beautifully clean accurate holes.

The James Swan Company of Seymour, Connecticut, (1856-1951) were pioneering auger manufacturers with no less than 17 patents filed for auger bits or the machinery to make them. They also supplied chisels, gouges gimlets, and braces, and were suppliers to the United States Navy.  As a toolmaking centre of excellence the area around New Haven, Connecticut has a rich history, perhaps most notably in the development and manufacture of hand forged augers.

These augers are pre-owned and not covered by our Lifetime Warranty - please see Terms and Conditions.
