AS001 Half set of 8 Josiah Cooper crucible steel Jennings augers 1870-1884

160

A rare set of augers by Josiah Cooper of Sheffield, the majority of which are in very good condition. They are all branded “Preston’s exact size” and the smallest four are also struck with Cooper’s own mark.

The quality of manufacture is exquisite and although this set do have some pitting on the shanks (cosmetic) and one or two spots on the flutes they show very little sign of wear.  The screws are beautifully fine and crisp and there is plenty of meat left on the high D shaped wings.

Josiah was originally from Staffordshire and Established his auger manufacturing business in 1870 it was dissolved in 1884. Given the quality of these bits it is a great shame that he didn’t keep going.

  • 1/4" to 1-1/8” by eighths
  • Supplied in a new British made 18 pocket canvas auger roll.
